В 1828 Пушкин подготовил второе издание поэмы, добавил эпилог и вновь написанный знаменитый пролог — «У лукоморья дуб зелёный…».Сюжет поэмы соткан из традиционных ситуаций русских сказок и западно-европейских волшебно-рыцарских произведений («Орлеанская девственница» Вольтера и «Неистовый Роланд» Ариосто), частью переиначенных и пародированных. Многие подробности и имена всех троих соперников Руслана (Рогдай, Ратмир и Фарлаф) заимствованы из первых томов «Истории государства российского» Н.Н. Карамзина, вышедших в 1818 году. Это поэма вдохновила очень многих художников-иллюстраторов. В данное издание включены работы художников XIX века: Иванова И.А., Игнациуса О.-Ф., Лебедева А.И., Нестерова М.В., Панова И.С., Рамазанова Н.А. и Соломко С.С.
